ECOHOUSE

LOCATION: LONG BEACH, CA
OWNER: CHILDREN TODAY
ARCHITECT: STUDIO ONE ELEVEN

Nonprofit organization, Children Today, chose Howard CDM to transform two existing buildings to an eco-friendly LEED Gold Certified daycare/education facility for homeless children as their families search for employment.

EcoHouse, winner of U.S. Green Building Council’s Merit Award for Sustainable Sites, included environmentally friendly Forbo flooring, recycled composite fencing, water-based paint, and forestry-certified lumbar. Low-flow plumbing and outdoor rainwater catch basins enhance the environmental emphasis of the design.

The landscaping showcases a careful selection of California-native plants – all of which are drought tolerant. The 15,286 SF of open space play yards are complete with artificial turf and decomposed granite walk paths and feature shade structures and log slides for children to climb and play.
